Had to revive this thread just to have the best user name ever on the front page. Whatever happened to him?

Hard to decide between Julia NAGLE and Elenor POULOU. Both played/play keyboards in a rough-edged, not too syrypy way. I go for the present.

Went for Julia (see Dave's comments re. the Unutterable here, and mine elsewhere) but on reading through the whole thread I'm reminded that Riley did have some moments of utter greatness - Deer Park, the NWRA and Iceland being three prime examples.

Yvonne Pawlett--she made the keyboards an integral part of the group's sound, not an afterthought. I don't dislike any of the others, though--except Bush.
On edit: I take that back--don't care for Ms. Poulou either, although she's easier on the eyes than Bush. For me it would have to be Baines or Riley.

Yvonne Pawlett, no question about it - for the reasons stated by Dr. John above.
I am also a Julia fan, but songwriting and arrangements are more what I like about her. -------------------- You're talking about yourself.

Yvonne Pawlett, not sure she was the best but liked so much the early keyboard sound, just such a different sound compared to any other bands or even the Fall sound say after the Rough Trade era.

Very tough choice this one, Yvonne or Julia? I reckon Yvonne just shades it for the earworm two-note riff at the end of 'Music Scene'. It pops into my head about ten times a day.

Elani, or however you spell it, is the best Fall keyboard player. She has made a Lasting impression in the group's sound. I like how her keyboards have an authentically 70's sound. Somebody on the forum recently said her keyboards sound more 'played by a human' than Julia Nagle's keys, less programmed effects, etc. I agree.

Her sound (or rather the keyboards) remind me a lot of Una's and Yvonne's. It's easy to say a lot of the other keyboardists(?) were better, but they were using much more up to date and advanced instruments I think. Eleni's looks a tatty old thing, but it's sound suits The Fall imo. Another Eleni vote. -------------------- "Cim keel makilagh teluxa sulomegh yeilck vola-vola coco la fullagh me-nag"

This really difficult: they're all different, and I feel they all added something. I used to dismiss Schofield, but I've been listening to Frenz a lot lately, and she's actually doing some rather ace stuff. Still, I voted for the magical Eleni, cos she's made the band her own in a way none of the others did. In a way, it's as much Eleni's group as Mark's, these days....

Love most of these for different reasons, but voted Julia in the end, not just for The Fall stuff but for lots of other great music she's been involved with.
