She'd just responded to the "roommate wanted" flier she'd seen on the campus of the college. She'd been taking a few classes there this fall as a part of her facade. She was only a part time student and because her address was listed in the area they hadn't required her to live on campus.
So she'd decided to answer the ad, and she was almost regretting it even a month later.
But she couldn't leave... She couldn't walk away from the woman that she'd met. Beautiful, smart and funny, Ana was everything hat she wasn't. Ana was what she had always wanted to be, what she had dreamed of becoming and wished every day she would suddenly turn into.
But Ama wasn't stupid enough to think that she actually would. She knew she'd never change. But perhaps... Just for a time... She could be close to the birds, even if she would never be able to fly for herself. She wanted to be close to the beautiful woman with the intoxicating scent, the blood that nearly sang to her.
But so far she'd been good. She wasn't sure if Ana was even into that kind of thing really, and she didn't want to make the woman uncomfortable or anything. To lose her would send her back into the doubts and fears she'd had before. For the moment at least, Ama knew what she wanted, and she was happy with it. She would never be as pretty, she might be as smart, but really, she was just as old as Ana and the other was so much smarter than she was.
Blinking and looking up as she heard a door close, Ama grinned brightly as she caught the delicious aroma of her roommate. "You're late. I made dinner for you though. It's nothing special, chicken parmesan." She said as she put down her book and curling her knees to her chest. "Long day at work?"

She hated her job...
Ana sighed as she walked into the apartment, closing the door behind her as she knelt down to untie her shoes. She worked as a waitress at some small diner not far from the apartment, one that was about a half-way point between home and the university. Overall, the diner wasn't bad. The food was good and cheap, and honestly, the coffee they served was better than any she had tried before. The manager, however, just gave her a bad feeling. He was always watching her with the same look men had given her mother, and she had a feeling the fact that the uniform she had started with being two sizes too small had not been an accident...
A new job was needed, she was sure of that much. It was just difficult finding anywhere else as convenient as the diner. And it wasn't like she could complain about the manager...If she went to the cops, well, he had not done anything wrong. And who could you complain to when the person who owned the place was the one she had a complaint against?
At least she always had something nice to come home too...Ana has been worried when she put out a "roommate wanted" flier that someone she wouldn't get along with would respond. But Ama was great! Though their schedules conflicted quite a bit, Ana being a day person and Ama a night person, the Greek girl was certain she could call the other girl a friend. Though, hearing her voice, she remembered just how strange it was that Ama could always tell when it was her that walked in, even if she tried to close the door as quietly as possible...Talk about ears of a hawk...
"I sorry, Ama. It my turn to clean up, and some people did not want to leave."
She still held an accent in her voice, but it was a lot easier to understand now than when she had first crossed the Atlantic, even if her English still wasn't perfect...Taking off her jacket she put it on the rack and walking into the living room, smiling a bit in apology.
"Thank you, I eat in a bit...Right now just want to sit..."
She sighed, walking over and collapsing onto the couch after dropping her bag on the floor by it. Yeah, it was obvious that she had a long day.
"You have plans tonight, Ama?"

"Oh, I'm sorry. Next time just call me and I could help you get them out of there for ya." She gave a grin that resembled her translated surname. "Cause I was starting to get a bit lonely really." Her grin was sheepish now, and only her dark skin and light feeding kept the blush from her cheek.
As Ana sat down Ama leaned down and grabbed the woman's feet, tugging off her shoes. She knew she was being rather forward, but she hoped that the other wouldn't mind. Her grandmother's feet use to hurt her simply because of age, and Ama had taken to rubbing them to help. She did the same now, Massaging the human's feet with a light smile.
"Plans?" Ama shook her head, her dark hair shuddering slightly. "No... After leaving high school I kind of cut ties with everyone. And... Well I don't make friends easily." She said with a sad smile. Cutting ties was a nicer way of saying 'simply disapeared'. After all, she'd been at that school for too long. She couldn't let people start to notice that she wasn't really growing up.
"I was just reading a book for class. Nothing really important." Ama gave a little shrug, continuing her massage.
"Want me to reheat dinner for you? Get you a drink maybe?" She offered.

Ana smiled when her roommate said to just give her a call next time and she'd come and help. While the comment was nice, she didn't want to cause any trouble, which she was sure would be the only was to get some of their more stubborn customers to leave before closing. Though, if Ama had been joking, it fell on hopeless ears. Another thing she was still lacking was telling when people were joking in this country, unless it was something blatantly obvious...like a knock-knock joke.
When her friend grabbed her feet she frowned and was about to ask what she was doing, but when the massage started...She sighed at the wonderful feeling, relaxing and just letting her head fall back against the couch.
"Ahh...Efharisto poli..." ("Ahh...Thank you very much...")
Though she looked back up when her friend said she had no plans for the night. Really? That was surprising, she always seemed to have somewhere to go at night...Normally Ana just assumed it was night classes, but this was the start of a long weekend. But really, she had cut ties? All of them? That was sad...She just nodded when she explained she had just been reading a book for class.
"Oh...Well...I not going anywhere. Maybe we spend time together?"
Maybe they could rent a movie, or go out and see a movie, or whatever it was they wanted to do. While Ana was a bit more reserved than most girls their age, she avoided parties and large social gatherings like the plague, she wouldn't mind doing something with Ama. They never really seemed to have a lot of time to just hang out.
"Oh, no no...I can get those things, no need to serve me." She smiled, though didn't realize she could have used a better choice of words, "Thank you though...This is nice though..."

She didn't know how it happens, but even when people spoke another language she still understood them. That was why she smiled as Ana spoke, but she didn't say anything. Besides, the girl's voice was just as beautiful as she was.
"I would like that..." Ama said with a smile, leaning against the back of the couch, switching Ana's feet.
"Ana... You've been doing the serving all night hun..." She said rolling her eyes with a smile. "Besides, I'm just a Daddy's girl who gets everything paid for her. I can stand to do a little work." She pointed out. Granted that was just her current cover story, but well, it worked really.
Taking in a deep breath, her eyes fluttering shut she smiled. She smelt so good.... Her hands moved down from Ana's feet to her calves. Put then she seemed to snap back to herself, her hands moving back where they were before. "Sorry..." She mumbled, obviously embarrassed.
"You know... If you really don't like being a waitress, I could help you find a new job. I mean I know you have to want more than working there. You're so much smarter than me, you can be better than just a waitress after all."

Ana looked up and smiled when the othe rgirl said she'd like spending time together. Well, then that was what they would do. And she wasn't sure why but going to see a movie sounded pretty good. Or, even better, just staying here and renting a few movies. They didn't have to worry about crowds, buying snacks, or ending up sitting behind people who blocked the screen...And it wasn't like their TV was small anyway.
"Okay! How about we get movie? Or go to theatre, or what ever you want to do."
When Ama pointed out she had been serving all night though, and it wouldn't be a problem for a Daddy's girl to do work, though, she just shrugged. She just didn't want to make her friend wait on her. She was capable of doing it, Ama didn't need to forsake her own comfort for Ana's.
She was really starting to relax into the foot massage though, and really, she didn't mind when the hands drifted to her calves. That would have been nice too...But Ama pulled her hands back and apologized. Ana just opened an eye and looked at her, confused.
"Sorry? What for?"
But the conversation turned to her getting a new job. She just shrugged, once again reluctant to put her friend through any hassles just for her.
"I am not that smater than you, do not say that...But my job is convienient, in walking distance. Beside, I just do not like the manager. He thinks if he stares at me enough I will like men."
She just shrugged and went back to enjoying the massage. Besides, the job paid well, and she got great tips. She knew between them and her paycheck she made more than most college students.

"I just don't want to cross any lines... Make you uncomfortable or anything." She said simply, looking down.
"But we can do anything you want to do." Ama smiled again, her hands wandering back down, slightly this time as they went to her ankles. "Cause you're really the only one I like spending time with." She pointed out.
"But you are smarter than me. You've learned English so quickly Ana. I mean there are people who've been here for years and still can't understand or speak it. If I had to go it Italy, or Greece? I'd be lost if someone there didn't know English!" She grinned.
"Anyway, do you want a drink?" She said slipping off of the couch and moving to the kitchen. "And don't get up!" She demanded with a grin.
It was only a few moments until the dish was rotating in the microwave. The oven had kept it fairly warm since she'd just made it a little bit ago. But as the scent of the pasta, sauce and chicken began to fill the apartment Ama grimaced. Ana smelt much better....
"The manager? Well if you don't like him, you really should find a new job. I mean what do you really want to do?" She asked, hanging over the back of the couch near Ana's head.

Ana just shrugged when Ama voiced worries about crossing line. Touching someone's calves didn't really seem like crossing any lines to her. Especially when it was coming with a foot massage. No, Ama had nothing to worry about, not with her anyway. As long as she didn't just start suddenly groping her or touching places that shouldn't be touched, Ana knew she wouldn't have a problem. In Greece and Italy people weren't as homophobic as they seem to be on this side of the Atlantic...Besides, she didn't think Ama looked at her like that anyway.
When Ama said she was the only one she liked spending time with, Ana blushed a bit, but she smiled.
"Oh, thank you...How about rent a movie? We do not have to go out then, as I am tired of walking today...Etsi kalos...I love this massage..." ("So good")
But the whole thing with English...Ana just shook her heard, not taking any credit for that.
"We were required to take English in school...Most kids in Europe are leaning it."
And then she was ordered to stay seated while Ama got her food for her. Just sighing in defeat, she did as her friend asked, just saying a glass of water would be fine. As the smell of her dinner made it to her though, she grinned a bit. Truth be told she loved it when Ama made dinner for her. Why, she didn't know, but it was so kind, and she didn't have to do it...
"Mmm...That smell good, Ama. But, I do not know what I want to do...Aie, I really don't."
She was having an extremely hard time figuring out what she wished to do with her life. All she knew was that it had to be well-paying, so she could bring her mother over and support her...A doctor, maybe? She had a feeling she'd make it into a good medical school...Shaking her head, she sighed. She really had no idea...

"Better." She grabbed the remote for the TV. Flicking through a few channels she came to the Pay-Per View section and grinned. "Now we really don't have to go anywhere. All we have to do is pick what movie we want to watch."
Looking down with a frown as Ana blew off the complement. "Hey, I took French at school for a few years and can't remember a word of it." She grinned. Granted she'd been through several years of nightmares and trauma.
But Ama laughed as Ana gave a complement of her own. "Yeah... it might... But you smell much better." She said with another one of her wolfish grins.
"Anyway," She said as she handed over the remote. "Pick a movie, I don't really mind any of them on, so pick whichever one you want." Walking back to the kitchen she pulled out the plate and brought it over on a hot pad with silverware. The smell made her nearly gag now, so she had to hold her breath as she brought the plate over.
"Dig in! Tell me how it is." She smiled as she slipped on the couch rather close to Ana now.

Ana blinked, surprised, when Ama grabbed the remote and took them to several Pay-Per View channels. They had these channels? Really? Well, that went to show just how little she knew about their own technology. Could they always have done this? Sighing, she shook her head, a bit disappointed in herself for not knowing these things.
But, back to languages.
"Maybe...But we ere really required to know it...I do not think that is the same here?"
Either way, she chose to stay silent on the fact that aside from English she also knew Greek and Italian, and a bit of French...She really didn't want to make herself seem smarter than anyone else. Especially not her friends. Friends that continued to surprise her.
When Ama said that she smelled better than the food, Ana looked up at her friend, a blush on her surprised face. Had she really just said that. Not used to really being complimented, complimented sincerely anyway, she smiled a bit, and just nodded when told to pick a movie. So, what looked good? By the time that Ama returned with her dinner, she had a promising movie picked out. A nice romantic comedy sounded good, she just hoped that Ama felt the same. Taking a bite of her meal, she smiled, and pointed to the TV as their movie came up.
"This movie looks good...And the dinner too! Efharisto! Thank you Ama."
Juts smiling at her friend, she continued to eat.
"Did you eat before I came home? I can share if you are hungry."

"It depends on the school. Most places require french because of some of the places here speak both English and French. High School was.... a bit rough for me though. Kinda why I had to cut ties and all that." She murmured as she pulled her hair back, wrapping a hair tie around it that had been stored on her wrist.
"I Love You Man? Yeah I saw the previews, seemed good." She said with a nod, leaning back and pulling her knees to her chest again.
"Huh? Oh, no I'm fine. Not really feeling pasta or chicken. There's even some left overs in the fridge if you want to take some for lunch tomorrow." She offered.
Of course she hadn't eaten yet, but she would go out after Ana was asleep. But for now... Since she was home and awake, she figured she'd spend time with her roommate and friend. Maybe... Maybe tonight she would finally get to taste the blood she could hear running under the woman's veins... That she could smell coming from her skin...
Her pupils narrowed, her arms and shoulders tightened. The hunger was overwhelming her now. And it was obvious from the clench set of her jaw that something was running like a rampaging bull through her mind. It was bad... All she could do was try to look at the TV, try to ignore the girl beside her...

Ana just nodded, picking away at her chicken as Ama described how the schools went with teaching other languages. And they were talking again about high school being tough for her friend...The Greek girl didn't see why. Ama was nice, kind, easy to like, so why would she have had a rough time? It didn't make sense really. But she didn't want to press the issue. If Ama wanted to talk about it, well, then they would talk about it, but she wouldn't go...what was the saying...poking her toes where they don't belong?
That was a stupid saying, now that she thought about it...
When Ama declined some chicken or pasta, and told her there was even some leftover for morning, she just nodded, though frowned a bit.
"Well, if you say so...Let me know if you change your mind, I do not mind sharing with a friend."
She gave Ama a smile, and settled into watching the movie. Ana was, for a while, oblivious to the inner torment going on in her roommate. Looking over once then, and seeing the clenched jaw, strange eyes, and grip on her shoulders, she frowned again.
"Ama? Are you feeling okay?"

Blood... The warmth, the scent so close to her was her! But why her! She'd been around so many humans! So many men, women, boys and girls! But she'd never ever been so thrown off by the scent of a human like she was from this young woman!
The words had little effect on her, and it was really as if she hadn't even heard them.
Stared straight ahead at the TV, it was only the wafting of the scent that was driving her mad that broke her from her concentration. Concentration of ignoring it.
Ama stood from the couch in one graceful movement and turned. "I... I just need some air is all." She muttered, heading towards their balcony.
Blood was on her mind... Damnit... She knew she should have just found someone... Gone to see Derek one more time. He could keep it a secret that she was still around. He possibly might have even loved her.... Which was why it would be stupid to go to him. He would want her to stay. Want to be with her forever, like he'd said when he'd taken her to prom. But that was the thing.. To her, forever was forever. And she knew he wouldn't want this. And well... In a few years, he probably wouldn't want her either.
Once she was out in the cold night air, things were better. Her head was clearer without the scent teasing her. She huffed softly, frustrated at herself. She'd gone nearly a week without feeding... How stupid could she be? Last time she'd done that...
Shaking her head she hoisted herself onto the ledge of the railing and looked down at the cars passing on the street below. Five stories up made for a rather nice view really...

Ana frowned, growing worried with her friend when she didn't answer her at first. If anything it looked like she was getting worse, just staring blankly at the TV like she was. And while she didn't know much about human biology, pupils getting narrow like Ama's had couldn't be good...right? Setting her plate off to the side on the couch, she turned to fully face her friend, and was about to ask again when Ama suddenly stood up and muttered about needing some air.
Standing as well, she watched as Ama walked out to the balcony, moving with a grace she had never really noticed before. Ana followed her, now really worried. It was like Ama was in a daze...What was wrong with her?
Well, all thoughts about that fled her mind when she saw her best friend climb up onto the railing ledge...
"Ama! No!"
Running out she grabbed Ama around the waist and pulled back, sending them both to the floor of the balcony. Ana was over top of her friend, kneeling down beside her, helping her sit up, her panic still all over her face.
"What is wrong with you!? That is not safe, getting up there! Ama, what is wrong? You are scaring me..."
Should she call the hospital? She didn't know, but she didn't like seeing her friend like this.

Her head whipped around as she sat onto the ledge with the grace of a cat. "What?"
She nearly laughed as the other tried to pull her down, and ti was only because she was caught off guard that it happened. "Ana! You're the crazy one! I was just coming out here to sit for a bit!" She said with a laugh, pulling the other girl up. She gave a snort and shook her head as she dusted herself off. "What you think I was gonna jump or something? Please, life's not that bad and I'm not that stupid." Besides, even this fall wouldn't kill her. Slow her down? Yeah, but not kill.
"You can chill Ana. Just relax darling." She said as she put her hands on the woman's shoulders, so much taller than she was it seemed.
"I just needed some air. Go back and watch the movie. I promise I'll be in in a second..." She was fighting the hunger in her eyes as her gaze drifted from Ana's eyes, to her lips and then to her throat. She could almost see the blood flowing there... Would have given anything to see just how sweet it tasted...
"Please... I... I just need a minute to clear my head. That's all." Her hands slid down Ana's shoulders to her upper arms and off. "I promise I'm okay. I'm not trying to hurt myself or anything."
