Whatever happened to the "suprise comical guest"?
And what was going on when MES and Kieron disappearred while the rest played Systematic Abuse?
Still, No Xmas For John Quays meant that the rest of the gig could have just been a bearded techie shitting in a bag and I would've still loved it.
In a way getting everyone all worked up for an encore for 10 minutes then having nothing happen pleased me more than any version of Blindness might have.

Not the best, but by far not the worst I've ever seen this lot. Still need a new bass player though...

Senior Twilight Stock Replacer / Tommy Gun / Fall Sound / unknown (to me!) / 50 Year Old Man / Pacifying Joint / I've Been Duped / Wings / unknown / unknown / Systematic Abuse (guitar / bass / synth only, for some reason?) --- No Xmas For John Quays

Maybe it was mark, was he surprisingly comical... or was it the John Quays song?

Lacklustre. The Fall never really hit their stride, never got into their groove. Where was the menace, the edge, the sheer presence of The Fall? Part of the problem was the new material. Can Can and Alton Towers just aren't songs, they're Jazz Odyssey. I've Been Duped is quite cute, but throwaway. Others seem to be retreads of older material. Senior Twilight Stock Replacer is Guest Informant, 50-Year-Old Man is another Reformation-y chugger. The No Xmas for John Quays encore (I thought it was Mother sister at first) had us in fits. Who on earth thought it would be a good idea to invite a gurning roadie with a broken mic on stage? Oddly enough, though, this -- embarrasing as it was -- was the highlight of the evening, the only time the band seemed to come alive up there. For the rest of the night they were hitting one note -- not an especilaly inspiring one -- and maintaining it for song after rudimentary song. I never, ever thought I would say this after a Fall gig, but it was boring.

Can't wait to see them again, though.

I thought it was f******g brilliant, complex soundscapes aided by mark's interventions, very inpressed with this new group and songs, they've improved much since july - my 5th and best fallgig of this year.
I'll post some pics when they're done.

I thought they played pretty well, and it was nice to hear No Xmas etc (although I didn't really as I will explain). There wasn't really that much new stuff, proportionally, though.

The evening, and my eventual retirement from the fray, and subsequent missing of the last few songs, was marred very much by the extrememly irritating 'younger' contingent at the front who decided to spend the whole gig hurling themselves around like teenagers at a green day gig. Withtin the first two songs I had been completely drenched by other people's drinks. Someone pushed me over onto the floor at one point, spilling most of my drink, the rest of which I hurled in anger over one of 'the moshers' - which wasn't a very mature response but I was very annoyed at that point. A good danceis one thing, but ruining it for everyone else isn't good. There were people around me who clearly felt the same. I've been down the front at the last two Fall gigs I've seen and people have been really dancing away happily without this type of showing off!

The bar staff were lovely, offereing me a pint on the house to replace the one lost down the front. I thought the venue was pretty good, and spoke to a few people I'd seen at previous gigs.

My friend Darren took a lovely photo of MES on stage, and got one of him arriving outside too. The stage pic I will try to post if he'll send it to me.

A good night all-in-all, though!

Well, as I say, I enjoyed it. It was the happiest I've seen MES in a while, which may explain the lack of edge which S Dawg felt.

The jazzy one was ok, as was the one with the I Wanna Be Your Dog chords (cf Elves, Librans, etc) near the end. I've Been Duped, though, was interminable. Nice enough but two and a bit minutes would suffice.

I really enjoyed the multi-faceted(!) 50-y-o- Man too.

Good venue.

Will post link to my pics when I get em uploaded.

Attention all units!

Re: Cricklewood Dance Club

Yet another stunning performance witnessed by all. Eleni wearing a black blouse with matching mini-skirt (extraordinary design there, 5/5). High point of the evening, of course, 'No X-mas for John Quays'. Crew filth invited on stage for that - strangely - added to the overall excellency of it. Nice to see 'I've been Duped' develop into a real stunner (more of a duet now - think Sonny and Cher). Fantastic rendition of '50-yr-old Man' that was. Mark going on about Sinclair computers, Steve Albini (pet hate?), Virgin trains and a certain 'Iggy', if memory serves me right that is. Nice meeting Tobydynamik, pocketsofresistance and other fellow Fallites.

From London,

I'm the unseen.

Hollerbusch, naechstes Mal biste aber wieder dabei.

This is mainly for completists only. Sound quality is beyond description. Pitch issues from beginning to end make this unlistenable.

Every gig I've been to that I thought was amazing, I come on here and find out it was in fact crap! laugh.gif

I missed STSR, came in on Tommy Shooter (this a GLORIOUS song, can't wait to hear it again) which to my ears is the best of the new songs, Can Can is fantastic too finger.gif , I wasn't looking forward to hearing 50 Year Old Man - all I'd heard before was a short snippet on Newsnight and it sounded like a novelty, but it's a great song. The good news to me is that the new songs were the best thing in the set, honestly can't wait for the next album. thumbsup.gif

I left half-way through Alton Towers coz I had to get home early, so I missed No Xmas For John Quays - dunno if this is a good thing or a bad thing. unsure.gif

What is it with the local trendy kids of Cricklewood? It seemed like an exact repeat of last years Galtymore gig - a bunch of kids jumping around like hyperactive monkeys? huh.gif

I've still got a hangover and I'm never touching a drop of alcohol for the rest of my life! sick.gif

Well said that man. Don't expect idiots like that at a Fall gig. Save it for the playground boys. Managed to stay in position and get a pretty decent recording though, even though I got soaked by flying (what I hope was ) beer. I'll let you all know when I've got the recording sorted and up somewhere. Managed to get a page of Mark's screwed up and discarded lyrics at the end of Safi. I'll scan that in when I get a chance.

Apart from the troublesome oiks, thoroughly enjoyed the gig, especially John Quays of course.
