This gets a very positive review (the first anywhere?) on p.124 of the new Mojo (issue 166) and suggests, among other things, that "the band's apparent homogeneity is more myth than fact".

Can anyone scan it in?

And From The Sunday Times August 26, 2007

The Fall: Box Set 1976-2007

Stewart Lee

Suddenly, Newsnight Review pundits speak of Mark E Smith as if one must be acquainted with his oeuvre. His group, the Fall, have entered the canon. But this five-CD overview of his 30-year career is a primer for anyone happy to admit ignorance, and surpasses all previous compilations. The catalogue is split into phases: the snarling speed drones of 1978-83, the chart-topping goth-psych of 1984-89, the electronic experimentation of 1990-97, and a selection of superb tracks from the past decade, fizzing with new-found vitality. Fans will enjoy some genuine rarities, scraped from an already strip-mined catalogue, though many remain rare for a reason.

Come on folks it's not that bad. OK, the chart-topping claim is a funny one, but I've read a lot worse reviews - including the Mojo one that's posted on this thread.

The Mojo review doesn't actually say ANYTHING, does it? It's completely devoid of any enthusiasm, bias or prejudice. Have they got rid of opinion, over at Mojo?

After giving RPTLC 4 stars, MOJO might have decided no opinions about the latest Fall release was better than embarrassing opinions.

From the October Q magazine review of The Fall box set:

"Pity the compilers faced with the task of distilling the best of The Falls bafflingly prolific output over the last 3 decades onto just 5 CD's. The absence of 1980's rockabilly gem Fiery Jack alone suggests this isnt the definitive article, rather a more idiosyncratic flick through Mark E Smiths backpages with the emphasis on alternate versions and rarities. The latter include a pelt through Gene Vincents Race with the Devil and 1998 B-side Calendar, co-written with Badly Drawn Boy after Smith fell into his car one night mastaking it for a taxi. A fittingly unorthodox tribute, albeit something of an opportunity wasted"

If a proper review of the Fall could ever be written, this forum would not exist.

Haven't had the chance to listen to any of it yet but there's a few interesting nuggests in the booklet. Steve Hanley doesn't play on "Cruiser's Creek" for one and "Hey Student" was originally called "Hey Student", was changed to "Hey Fascist" then back to Hey Student when it was revived. So it's already a nice one for geeks like me....
