Welcome to the Fall Cup 2007, a song against song knock-out competition that in 18 weeks time will come down to one ultimate champion Fall song. The last song Cup was held in 2005, in which Wings beat Garden by the narrowest of margins. In 2006 we had the Fall Albums Cup.

If you're new to this competition, it's pretty simple - each week you'll have a series of one-on-one match-ups between Fall songs. Pick the song you like the best. A number of songs come in various released versions, radio sessions or remixes; it's up to you to take into account all or any versions in your determination of whether you like it better than the opposing song.

The starting line-up of songs is listed here. To make up the required number of match-ups to get us down to 2 songs in the final, there will be 75 byes in the first round of the competition. The songs that get a bye will be randomly selected.

Differences this time: The matches will be randomly drawn in each round. I won't be publishing the full draw at the start of each round, so you won't be able to look ahead to future weeks - the match-ups will come as a surprise.

If there are any questions, please put them in this thread.

I would encourage you all to go away and listen to the songs that are matched up against each other before you vote - it's a great opportunity to dig out those ones you haven't played for a long while.

OK, let's hit it! Whup!

I'd like to make a friendly suggestion: if you vote for a song, please say why you chose it rather than just posting the title of the song. This makes it all a lot more interesting. Otherwise we end up with a thread with a list of two songs' titles alternating down the page.

What happens in the event of a tie when the poll closes?

Just read this - sorry laugh.gif

Trouble is, with my slow computer (at least when downloading from DIME) it took me almost 45-minutes to go through the first tranche of voting. If you want an educated comment, I won't be finished by the time the next lot start.

Which reminds me I'm away in France for a week from next Friday - can I do postal voting confused.gif

Does the software allow for a little page that displays the scores, like on Soccer Saturday?

I recognise that Jeff Stelling's wage demands are beyond the finance budget, but a visual would be fun!!!!

Hourly updates would be OK

Sorry, I'm afraid the software isn't that sophisticated. Unfortunately.

Ah, well we had that happen the first time I ran the Cup and I used to extend the poll for a further 24 hours, which gave a result every time. But that delay really buggered up the timing of everything.

Then I discovered a little trick - if I don't vote until the end, I can place my vote and close the poll at the same time with my Admin powers. So in effect I get the casting vote. If my vote would cause a tie, then I would abstain (but I don't think that ever happened).

The polls will be running Tuesday midday to Tuesday midday; if you're only away for a week, you should still be alright, shouldn't you? But if not, I'm sure we can arrange something. wink.gif

Will want a postal vote option for week commencing 28 May please

Away on hols from 22 May to 4 June, so middle week (28 May) is a problem. Well its not a problem, but this is my first fall cup and its fun to participate!!

There probably are access points to the internet in Salou Spain, but risk major bollocking from family for being a nerd.

Ah, you lucky bugger! Oh well, it'll do you a world of good to get away from the stress of worrying about the Fall Cup for a week.

Yep, 32 polls each week to get through in the first few rounds, until we start getting down to the real nitty gritty near the end of the competition.

Not a bad start. I think the last Cup we were getting in the region of 120-150 votes. But it usually picks up as the competition goes on.
