Any other tips or predictions, let's have them here.... I'm thinking Blindness might give some of the old classics a run for their money.

Got that wrong!

It's certainly less compelling now we have eight songs from a four year period! rant.gif

Rooting for New Puritan now - but hopes aren't high after I remembered that it got knocked out by Two fkin Librans in the song cup... dry.gif

Perhaps a lively (and timely) 2010 cup might be one fought out amongst the best album tracks of the 90's-00's....

Although it would be a bit anti-climactic if the one-year begrudgers saw fit to vote out anything that crossed in the blind man's path for the sakes of arguments.

Am I the only one to be a bit disappointed with how this has all turned out?

There are 24 sessions, recorded over a 25 year period.

Our quarter finalists are drawn from just three of those sessions and all recorded within two and a half years in the early eighties.

Cracking songs all, and great versions, but has the cup told us anything more than that we all really love Grotesque, Hex and PBL? (strangely, only one Slates song ever made it to a Peel Session, otherwise we would be reminded that we like that too).

Surely we all hoped that the tracks which shine in Peel Sessions, either because they're not widely available elsewhere, or because the session version is so superior, would shine here. Stand up R.O.D., Australians in Europe, Guest Informant, Words of Expectation, Blindness. Add your own to the list.

Can I endorse the idea of a competition that either excludes, or handicaps, the 1980 - 1984 period. Otherwise we're just telling each other stuff we already know.

while these knock-out contests are quite enjoyable, i think they are all doomed to end in disappointment. more with the Fall than any other band, the oeuvre is all. the albums league worked much better, cos it was a league and nothing was kicked out. whereas Leave The Capitol winning didn't feel meaningful or representative, and that's not cos it's not a great song.

I know many people are disappointed now that Blindness has gone, but that's how the majority voted. You can't deny the remaining songs aren't top shelf Fall.

Anyway, I'm thinking next year we might do a Cup based on all the singles A & B sides. That will take out quite a few of the big hitter tracks.

No-one will disagree that what's left is good stuff. By definition the tracks that have got through are the most popular. Blindness is an example of a track loved intensely and passionately by not quite enough people. That's democracy: you don't win elections by being liked the most but rather by being liked by the most.

The problem as I see it is that the charm of Cups in real life is the upset. There is not much of a chance of upsets with all the big hitters in play, so the results are a bit predictable.

I like the idea of shaking things up by using the singles - no room for Hip Priest or Garden or New Puritan (or Blindness). It's curious in fact how few of the 'archetypal' Fall tracks actually appeared as singles. Probably 'Wings' is the only one.

Maybe an A sides Cup and a seperate B Sides Cup would be better. The latter would be especially interesting - can I put in an early vote for Fantastic Life?

If it were for singles (both sides counting) it would be hard to see much getting past Kicker Conspiracy/Wings.

If it was all the As + Bs, you'd also get the other 7" in that double pack: Peel Container Drivers + New Puritan!

Also the Kimble single, and maybe 2 Librans demo...

Where's the Fucking Taxi? Cunt would take some beating; only a fool, however, would bet against the mighty (Birtwhistle's) Girl In Shop.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the first Fall decade dominates even more than before in such a competition, even without the likes of Garden, New Face in Hell, Winter etc.

I loved last years albums league, but you can't do that with 80 songs.

You could do brackets by decade (or era 1. Golden/Trials - PBL, 2. Brix Years - 3. 90's 4. 2000's). So the top tracks from each decade couldn't meet before the "Final Four."

Hmmmm, yes, that might be a bit of a problem. Perhaps I could arbitrarily eliminate any Peel session tracks...

That was your suggestion for this year, wasn't it? Hopefully next time! Cheers, good idea indeed.

Thinking about the singles that have been released, you are probably right there.

The fact that three of the semi-finalists are from one session (#3) is quite astonishing! ohmy.gif

Yes, that looks like quite a good idea. I'll file it away and see if I can work things like that in the next Cup.

And the winner is: New Puritan. applaud.gif

By a 34-29 vote against New Face In Hell - a very worthy runner-up.

Thanks to everyone who took part. beer.gif

Well Done New Puritan and well done Conway, having to listen again to the Peel Sessions has been great. There was really nothing that wasn't entirely worthy after the first round.
I had high hopes for Blindness as I find it the most dynamic, engrossing Peel sesh track and it draws me back more often than any other.
But the forum has spoken and so be it.
