ok, so in our area scholar's bowl quads start next week and i'm trying to cram as many random facts in my head as i can. does anyone know a good way to remember all the constitutional amendments? or presidents and basically all government stuff in general. Also, i was wondering if anyone else in the KC area is on a team going to quads so i could keep an eye out for em.

Take AP Government. It's quite sad I know what the "Necessary and Proper" clause is.

haha, last year in quiz bowl I wasn't consistent enough to be the player for a certain subject each match, so I was in most of the time. My famous answers included, epithelial tissue, "Shake Your Bootie," and KC and the Sunshine Band. And maybe the ninth amendment. rofl.gif

Oooh! Oooh! I wrote a little thingy to help me remember these... sadly though, I have no clue where it is. Let's see if I can remember a couple...

13 = abolition of slavery = unlucky for slaveowners
17 = congressional pay = twisted congressmen all love to go to NC-17 movies

Hmmm... I shall have to look for my sheet!

Not related to any of the original questions, but for the math calculations, I've found that memorizing (so you don't have to go through it in your head/ on paper) various divisions of 360 is helpful on quite a few questions (we invariably have "convert to radians" at some point in a match)...
1*360, 2*180, 3*120, 4*90, 5*72, 6*60, 8*45, 9*40, 10*36, 12*30, 15*24, 18*20... Quite a few... now you know why the ancients decided that there'd be 360 degrees in a circle... it divides into a bunch of numbers evenly. http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a4_194a.html
If I think of any of the other stuff I have written down (I lost my paper, damnit...), I'll post that.

hehe, we made alot of those mneumonics in Gov class.
8 is a twisted 0, it was cruely or unusually punished.
<FALSE STATEMENT>both 18 and 21 changed the voting reqs, and the voting ages were 21, then 18.</FALSE STATEMENT>
22 is for two terms for presidents. (two 2s, get it?)

I dun remember the others tongue.gif

18 and 21 are alcohol amendments, not voting age, for the record. I don't think voting is intoxicating... well, maybe to some people. I remember them in order, but I don't have in clever rhymes or mnemonics or nmemonics, or however that's spelled.

i think i am not made for memorizing things. i made presidents flashcards, and by the time i was done going through the set a few times i had succeeded in learning 3 or 4 and unlearning everything i had down before that. it was sad, i missed lincoln and kennedy AND clinton. (dont' ask how, i don't have the slightest idea). some day we'll have to develop the ability to learn through osmosis so i can just fall asleep on the history book and wake up smarter biggrin.gif

lol, seriously.
When a president question comes along, do what I do. Put down your buzzer.

For some reason what I make a point to study for academic/ quiz/ scholar bowl never stays with me, but what I read/ study for school or for my own curiosity always comes to my mind at the right moment in a meet. Other random trivia drives me nuts sometimes, when I know I know the answer, but can't spit it out... I couldn't think of who "wrote" the Hardy Boys mysteries the other day, after my grandmother forcibly made me read those for like 7 years.
We won our meet last night; I was 2nd highest scorer! Our first guy is GOOD. He knows everything. And #3 is also a former Scholar, who does well, too.

hehe, I'm always second on our team. That doesn't mean, however, that I answer very many questions. Our team is mostly led by our genious senior, who also happens to be a 2001 MSA Alum.

today our team got interviewed for the school broadcast (Patriot Vision...yeah. that original.) we were excited, as this meant that someone in the school realized we had a team. For the interview Hunter answered the question "how did you get into/ try out for scholars bowl?" with a long detailed answer that involved hot dog eating, the 100 situps in 100 seconds test, a couple laps around the building and a fastest finger competition, among other bizarre things. the reporter actually believed him. I begin now to understand why a) Hunter's interviews never make it onto the program cool.gif the reporters generally shun us and c) things are always more interesting when Hunter is around.
