2005's Nerdiest Movies

Of course, there are other movies I know I'm highly anticipating that don't exactly qualify as "nerdy" in my opinion (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Elizabethtown, and Memoirs of a Geisha to be specific), but I figured that these five were the most suitable to be catagorized as such.

Oh, and has anyone seen any good movies lately? I've seen Closer, which is an excellent movie if you're ok watching an extremely brutal look at love and relationships and all that jazz.

I agree with Seth about HGTG, if they screw it up I shall be pissed.

In terms of good movies lately, I saw House of Flying Daggers recently and really enjoyed it. I like the Wuxia genre, and it was more of a love story than an action story, whereas Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon was a little of the opposite.

They are making a movie out of Memiors of a Geisha? Woot! HGTG and Memiors...Hopefully they will somewhat resemble the books.

Speaking of good movies...Saw was great.

The most recent movies I've seen include The Forgotten, Dracula 3000, Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Code 46, Anchorman, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie and Sky Blue. (The guys and I watch at least 2-3 movies every weekend.) Of those, the Evil Deads rocked, because Bruce Campbell is hot, and Code 46 rocked, because Tim Robbins is awesome. Anchorman wasn't all that funny, though there were funny bits often enough to keep it interesting, but what most rocked about it was the Tim Robbins cameo, 'cause Tim Robbins is, again, awesome.

The Forgotten and Dracula 3000 weren't all that great.

Sky Blue, a Korean anime, was the best of all the movies I listed above, though. I saw it at the Tivoli here in St. Louis, and man, it was worth the $8 admission. Best anime I've seen in a long time. Cowboy Bebop: The Movie was also good—it's been over a year since I finished watching the series, so it made me smile to see the characters again.

Anyway, as far as the "nerdy" movies listed are concerned, I'm not a great fan of the Harry Potter movies, I don't care about Narnia, I definitely don't want to see another King Kong, and I don't see how the "trilogy" of five books could ever be compressed into one HGTG movie. That leaves the third Star Wars movie, which is the only one I can guarantee having any interest in.

I think Episodes 1-2 were really pretty terrible...but I'll still come along for the ride on this third one.

I am looking forward to the next Harry Potter book, though. And the next Ender's series novel from Orson Scott Card comes out next month, which makes me incredibly happy.

Incidentally, there is another nerdy movie that could be included in the list: War of the Worlds. (That hasn't come out yet, right?) That's kind of along the lines of King Kong, i.e. another remake of a classic sci-fi.

...although I have no idea why Tom Cruise is involved.

...but after more research I have concluded that I must see War of the Worlds, because Tim Robbins is in it.

(If you couldn't tell, my two favorite actors are Bruce Campbell and Tim Robbins.)

Oh yeah. Lots of times. The TV commercial didn't impress me that much, but the internet-only trailer was one of the funniest I've ever seen.

OK...I went out and saw Hitchhiker's Guide earlier tonight. My verdict: It doesn't suck. It's not perfect, but it doesn't suck by far. I actually laughed pretty hard through most of the movie. When the credits rolled, everyone in the audience started clapping, which in my experience tends to be a sign of a decent film. I found it to be a very entertaining movie. Personally, I thought Ford and Slartibartfast were hilarious. Don't go in expecting an adaptation of the book, because it's not. However, I do recommend it to everyone. I don't think you will be really disappointed.

Hopefully I've eased some of your fears.
