Quote of the Random Period of Time: "When in doubt, describe yourself. Or a random blade of grass." ~ Aherne to Rahina on MSN, explaining the RoMer's surefire way of making posts longer.
We are for EXPERIENCED and DETAILED RPers ONLY!! We expect a certain level of activity, which means being online at least a few times a week.

Howdy kids. Well, not kid, you guys are probably older than I am, nonetheless, it is besides the point.
I'm new here (less than forty eight official hours of registration, whoot whoot), and I've been attempting to look through the boards and get the general aspects of RoM. And I must admit, I'm intimated. Who knows how long I've actually role-played, but I've never attempted anything as complex and detailed, and over-all confusing as the multi-factional and detailed landscape as the Realm of Mystery. Also, when joining forums I've been one to pick out the immature ones, so I know what in the world is going on.
Here, I am little less than useless.
So basically this thread is to a. warn you of my lack of experience, when it comes to situations like this, and b. ask a few questions. (and secret option c. get to know the rest of you).
Los Preguntas: 1. Do any of you live in Europe? I recently was transferred to Italy, so my schedule is a bit off from the people in the states.
2. Can you role-play your character on multiple threads at the same time?
3. How do you join a guild?
4. Are there certain characteristics (i.e. attitudes, appearances, etc. etc.) that apply to Noresh or Noctis?
5. What happened to all the other guilds, such as Knights, Warriors, and Thieves?
6.. When joining a thread, is it acceptable to simply bounce into one, or do you have some recruiting process?
Umm... I'm pretty sure that I had some other questions, but I believe I'm too tired to fully access the nether regions of my expansive mind. (haha, yeah right). And I think I covered my basic quandaries,
Don't worry. Were all pretty friendly so ask away. Also I was like you, and once you get into it it's not that hard to keep up.
The answers.
1. Nope, I live in Miami.
2.Of course, but just keep it chronological. If you learn something in one thread that is supposed to be a later one, you can't go to your earlier one and use that information.
3.You have 2 choices.
a. You can go to the chamber of decisions and have the leaders of the 2 guilds talk to you and you find out about the guilds or
b. you choose the one you like, and you go into their main campus and acceptance halls and post a RP and the leader will RP with you to join.
4. Not really, In Noctis we have a light mage, so go crazy. Though most do follow the whole dark and bad for Noctis and light and good for Noresh.
5. They died out I think. I came in before that, so any oldies around want to explain it in more depth?
6.If it is not marked for anybody, than it is okay. Also if it says open, it is okay. but when we RP most people follow a posting order just to keep things organized.
7. I am fine, how about you.
Did I do my good deed today? I think I did, now I can go back to being bad.
Also, in Noctis, ignore the dead bodies hanging on the wall, thier just for decoration.

Salutations, eh, and welcome! It's always a touch nerve-wracking when one joins a new board, or their first role-play game, so do feel free to ask anything to anyone. We're all here to have fun, so we like to help. At least that's what I'm supposed to tell you, eh. *smirk*
SO, you've been transferred to Italy? My aunt just got back from a trip there actually. I have some lovely postcards. What region are you in? A few of us here are from Europe, not myself however; we're quite a diverse cast of writers. You'll find our ages range just as much as our locations and occupations. Many of us are students, once again I’m not included, but some of us have full-time and/or part-time jobs as well or on the side. Don't worry about time-zones; this isn't real-time, and people are very patient; comes with the territory of written role-play.
You can role-play your character in more than one place at a time, but it's rather essential you know how much you can handle. Also, try to keep time-lines in mind; for instance, if you start a role-play and then a second one, you're character will not know of things that occurred in the second role-play during the first, so you can not use the gained information in the first thread. Common sense, really. I favour a mere one thread at a time, though sometimes, if I'm not bogged down with work, life, and other threads, I'll dabble in two or three threads; though when a major plotline is going on, I find not entering more than one casual thread is better. Those are my personal preferences; others will differ. Also, try to keep in mind if it’s a Plot thread or a Casual thread; sometimes, there will be specific tags (always obvious) as to who is invited into a thread (usually in the case of a Plot). If you don’t see one it’s an Open thread.
Like Viclo said, when you wish to join a guild (and you don't have to, but it does have its advantages), you merely go to the Camber of Decisions, and have a small role-play with both the Faction Grandmasters (Mercra for Noctis, and one of the two High-Ladies of Noresh, usually Rahina). They will tell you about the countries, answer your questions, and let you decide either on the spot or in the future. If you've already made up your mind, you can approach the leader of the lands you're interested in joining, and they'll do the same thing on a one-on-one basis with you.
I’ll answer your questions about what happened to the former guilds so you’ll better understand what the deal is with Noctis and Noresh. Back when the board was still running with many many guilds, it became apparent that as people moved on, forgot about, or lost interest in ROM, some of the guilds were becoming very vacant and empty. Weak, in a sense. There was a movement then, both ICly and OOCly, to merge the guilds into two countries. The ‘good’, morale guilds (Healers, White Knights, ect) became Noresh, while the darker, ‘evil’ guilds (Necromancers, Assassins, ect) became Noctis. The Thieves, however, branched out, and so some neutral characters running around are what remains of (or what is coming back as, depends on the way you look at it…) the Thief Guild, run by Illusion.
Both 'countries' have characteristics stereotypical to their natures, but both also break those bonds in one way or another. Noctis, like the name suggests, is considered the dark realm; evil, in a sense. Most of its members are dabblers in darker magics, are dangerously ambitious, and, for the majority, their ethics and morals are skewered. However, some do not consider themselves evil; some may consider themselves neutral, or even good and just there as a means of, say, protection, education, self-discovery, necessity, etc.
Noresh, too, is typically morale and considerate of the goals of others. They focus on healing magics, justice, peace, etc. Most of the Noresh members are good-natured and righteous. However, it has its exceptions, and some are selfish, unjust, etc. Noresh, however, is slightly more strict in regards to its members; you’ll notice that many are “good is good is good!” where as in Noctis it’s entirely open to interpretation. Noresh is also slightly more unified, eh; for instance, there is more respect for the opinions of others, people tend to be more social, and it’s less caste system than Noctis.
There are outer allegiances and character relations, of course; don’t think that if you’re from Noresh, you can’t chill with folks from Noctis. There are even specific places in both countries that people from the ‘opposing’ faction are allowed to visit. Same is if you decide to become neutral (you don’t have to be a Thief is you choose this path).
So, there you go. I'm a bottomless pit of useless knowledge, WHOO!

Creejak's got it pretty much down pat, lol. Timeline issues, though, will pop up, I'm sure. Best thing to do is to only have a couple going at once until you're comfortable, where you can then branch out. Only disadvantage is is if someone suddenly disappears or stops posting well... You end up twiddling your thumbs. At least, that tends to be what happens to me, which can be really frustrating. It happens across all sites though, so I mean... it's a part of Rping lol.
I won't bother adding to what's already been said. Not that I could, since, in the grand scheme of ROM, I'm like... middle-aged, lol. I started here 4 years ago, almost 5 I think. So although I've been around for a while, ROM still has a lot more history before I showed up.
And, just to answer the two questions I can, I live way up in the Great White North (ie. Canada) and I'm utterly exhausted. School + life = the suck when you're not a morning person and have to get up early. XD Haha.
Anyway, I'm sure you'll do just fine here. If you need someone to Rp with, you can drop me a line. I'm not really in the mood to Rp right this second (yay for wanting to do story development as opposed to Rping), but I wouldn't mind getting another one going on here. It's been far too long >>; And maybe someone uber new will like... kick-start my urge to write for Shadow. That'd be nice.

Wow. Thank you all for replying in such a timely manner. I realize now what I've been missing hanging around nearly dead forums, and email one on ones for so long. I'm already impressed by y'alls activity.
Anyways, since you guys are asking a few questions, I'll just go ahead and summarize a little bit about myself. Uh, when not in character, I'm usually referred to as Schmitty. I am usually mistaken for a upper class men, if not a collegiate student. So far, I have had my fair ammount of travels. I've been to 10 schools so far, and lived in three different countries, and have visited several more. I live in the Pordenone, province of Italy, which is just north of Venice along the southern rim of the Dolomities (small range in the Alps). I've been role-playing for about four years, I want to say, however I don't remember exactly. Currently, I'm trying to re-enforce my resume (I'm not fancy enough to look up the little "chicka" over letters) so I'm on the varsity volleyball team, book club, student council, and other assorted clubs, that along with schooling take up a lot, if not all of my waking hours. I snowboard. I like awesome hats, jackets, and converse, assortments of rock musica, demented things, and drawings. :] And I think that sums me up fairly well.
I am well, thank you for asking, a bit tired and congested, but trucking right along.
By the looks of things, I'll think you'll be seeing me first at the Chamber of Decisions, for Runealia would be very contradictory to the Noresh guild, (however intriguing that sounds at the moment) she'll probably find herself more along the up and rising Thief guild or Noctis. However, the choices have yet to be made!
Again, I thank you for all your help (especially the ever informative Creejak. o.o wow). And I'm sure you'll be called on again (I'm not afraid to ask when I need help.), and or I'll see you guys in a role-play, for I'm anxious to make myself known to you all!
[I'd write more and a better conclusion by my time is limited.]
