Chapter One – The Dream/First Encounter

I was again, walking down the endless hallways, the lights, dim. The doors had metal strengthened glass windows. Each room seemed to have various things in; cardboard boxes, shelves and labs. In all of the rooms, the lights where off, and the doors were all locked. There source of light in the hallway, but it wasn’t coming from windows or lamps, but no were. I felt light headed and the walls didn’t feel real when touched. You couldn’t escape the smell of anaesthetic and the painted white walls.

Though the pattern of doors had come to a peculiar fate; instead of the corridor continuing, it had transformed into a door. It lay before me, and without checking any other doors to see if they where open like I had been doing, I ran forward and grasped the door handle. It opened, I walked through carelessly, I had realised that I was now free from the smell of anaesthetic, and the blinding white walls. I turned round and closed the door, feeling smug to be saying goodbye, but not checking the hallway in its last moments, if it were to change.

Now the walls were grey, and the doors too, grey but with no windows. The corridor bent round out of sight but before I proceeded I checked the first door. It opened but before my emotions could decide on what next, I heard a deafening continuous yell and a blast of wind. There was no room but darkness. I forced the door closed and stepped cautiously across to the parallel door. It opened; there was a chamber toilet and a frosted window above. I climbed up to it and pulled on it. It came open, all I could see in the inches it was open was weeds and grass and a faint blue sky. This didn’t seem real. I hit the window to see if it would smash, it would be a tight fit if it did, but the window almost reflexed without movement and felt like steel. I left the room rubbing my hand. Closing the last door, I walked to the bend in the corridor, my sight told me it continued the same, I tried the next door, it was very big. From the door was a raised platform, and three steps leading down. Ahead was a translucent white panel, like in airports and a door, which was also a white translucent panel. You couldn’t ignore the sun flowers. Sun flowers in vases, sun flowers in pots and sunflowers on the floor.

I opened the door and scream, the walls around me transformed into my bedroom.

It hadn’t seemed like a dream, my sheets were sodden, I was hot and sweaty. I leapt out my bed as if a monster was to crawl out. I searched for my alarm clock to see what time it was, checking the floor around me as if a tarantula was around. I looked at the blurry L.E.D. clock, it displayed 4:00 A.M., there was no way I would get back to sleep, so I slipped on some clothes. I tried to find something to fill the time. Time seemed to go slow, but I still manage to waste three and bit hours. I made my way downstairs a bit early and set my first foot on the kitchen floor tiles. They were as cold as ice, so I nipped across the kitchen and scavenged for something edible. I walked into the living room and sat down of the settee. Outside it was still pretty dim, I thought about the dream I had just had, it seemed real, and what had it meant?

I opened my eyes to a low voice, I had fallen asleep on the settee, and I had a terrible headache, and this time I had what I call ‘a black dream’. I sat upright, my dad was standing over me, he spoke with a farmer’s accent. “Me an’ ye Marm ar’ goin’ down te town”, he paused, “I expect yer tired”. “How did you know?”, “I ‘erd th’ blooday floorboards creakin’, anywee, get some rest, me an’ ye marm ar’ goin’ now, see ya”. I walked out of the room and called from the door, “ye can come down, in you’ own time”. The door creaked and fell shut.

I got up and grabbed some money and left five minutes later.

The morning air was slightly foggy and there was dew on the grass, despite the yawning sun, it was cold. I stepped out the door in my hiking boots. Closed the door behind me and made my way down to the bottom of the path, and edged across the border of the woods, which hadn’t woken yet, and still lay dark. I looked down at the floor, the texture changed from bits of twig to shiny cobble, I looked up and before me was the town fountain. I walked past and headed towards the docks. The market was bustling, people where shuffling past each other. I stepped over to the first stand.

I looked down at the amulets, jewellery, swords and powders. Then suddenly the owner of the stand caught my attention. “Son”, I looked up, I shuddered at the sight of her golden fire-y eyes. “son, great danger is coming, I sense it, go home, now”. Suddenly a man knocked into me and the words flew out of my head. A few moments later, they came back into my head. Seeing as I could afford anything, I may as well go home.

So I turned around and started to set back. I stepped into the woods, when I heard a scream, I looked into the trees – no it couldn’t be anything in there, then I realised what that lady had told me. I set off back into town, it wasn’t a good idea, but I didn’t care. I got to the order of the town, the sun had disappeared behind the clouds and the whole place was covered in a trail of blood. I looked up at the stone building, there was an arrow in blood and the fountain was spurting out blood. I walked further cautiously and put my hand over my mouth.

Before me was a pile of carcases, the woman lying there, slashed across the ribs, she pulled up the energy to talk. “Go and raise the alarm, take what you need…”, then her voice shrivelled away and her eyes closed.

The sun was now at it’s fullest, I grabbed a sword for protection, with a fine leather casing. It was made of what looked like steel, and coated with gold. I walked over to another stand and picked up a necklace. I set off back along the familiar woods, opened the door of my house. I walked into the kitchen and stocked my rucksack with food, I pulled the blanket off my bed, scooped up my belongings and said goodbye to my home, it seemed like I wouldn’t see it again. I set back into town and across the painful back passages, not looking at the town square. I reached the border; the grass grew through the coble. I briefly peered back and set across the narrow valley, covered in grass. My eyes where transfixed on a blurry point, and my rucksack rustled. The sun was away again and it was rather windy and cold.

On a short note, chapter two is going a bit slowly, but chrono has eyes for someone, and it's not the last of those mysterious slaughters...
