Carmina Gadelica was a quiet place to be. Where Mac Anu was full with hundreds of old and new players, the city seemed almost empty except for a few people gathering items before going on adventures. Not many people got this far in their quest in ‘The World.’ Yet now came the end. It was his last time here in this game and he wanted it to be a nice one. Life came up and it was about time he left this game behind. He already had plans to make quite a bit of money off the account. Either way, this was his last time here and he wanted to enjoy the virtual world in peace.

It was strange to think of the beginning of his quest and how far he had gone, all the people he had met, and just how much he’d experienced in his time. Some things had changed his life and personality, but it was time to move on. He couldn’t live in this virtual reality forever and there were things that awaited him, a real life. I’ve ignored things for so long… He had plans to make it so the person fully understood his clan and place, but…still, it was going to be so strange knowing that his account would live on, yet he was going to leave it behind.

The Fist Fighter pushed himself up from the bench he was on. The stars glowed in the night and he took one last resentful look at the virtual reality he had enjoyed so much in the past few years. Friends, changes, even a bit of fun here and there had filled his adventure, but now it was coming to a close. Someone else would continue it in his steed. Hopefully it’s not some fat retard… Golden rings surrounded his character and Carmina Gadelica disappeared.

James pulled off his goggles and rubbed his eyes. It was about eleven o’clock and pitch black outside. The teen grabbed the mouse and moved it to click on Firefox so he could find out if any bids had been made on his character. James was surprised to see that, in fact, there had been a bid on it. Three, in fact. Blinking, he clicked on the last bid. He hadn’t put out much for the character, but it seemed like he might make a bit of money for his work in ‘The World.’

James closed Ebay out and turned off his computer with a sigh. In the morning he would no longer have access to his account and no longer would he be Shenmock the blue-haired Fist Fighter. Tomorrow he would just be James, a boy who was trying to think about the life ahead of him, the real life. ‘The World’ had been his personal hideaway from all of his troubles. Now he would have to face those head-on, even if he disliked it.

The boy crawled into his bed, not bothering with the covers. The window was open, letting in a cold wind that chilled him into relaxation. His room was hot and it had reached up to one hundred degrees during the day today. But now he could rest and then think about things tomorrow. Just…don’t think about it. No second thoughts. This is a good idea. Then James closed his eyes and left ‘The World’ behind. For good.

-------------------------------

Terry Chang was a lucky guy.

First, no homework, then, fresh baked chocolate chips, and now finding someone who was selling their high level account from ‘The World?’ How much better could it get? It was certainly strange to find someone so high in level to be selling their account on Ebay, but he couldn’t complain. Plus, he was said to be equipped with a robust amount of weapons and a Water Magic, which only a handful of people had in the game. Terry had tried to play the game only a week ago and found that without a party, he was hopeless, and when he found them, they killed him once they got into the field. It seemed like a world where you either had a good time or a rather horrible time in the first outing. Being a powerful and special class was simply too good a deal to pass up, but the people who had already bargained had…rather high bids. Think of the possibilities!

Terry smiled at the sight of the amount of time left, a mere three minutes. He certainly wasn’t trying to get the bid into the high hundreds, but how could he complain? It was something too good to pass up, so he bid on it and found himself, unsurprisingly, to be the winner. Okay, so he was now officially broke, but he had an extremely powerful account in ‘The World’ now! Plus, there was so much he had left for him, and now he was even in a clan and one of the most renowned to boot!

Raising an eyebrow at the password being ‘poop,’ Terry slipped the disk in and pulled on the goggles, adjusting the straps so they were tight enough but not too uncomfortable. He typed in the name on the login screen: Shenmock. And then the password: poop. Terry’s eyes widened at the sight of the screen uploading and he probably would’ve choked on the cookie he was munching on if there hadn’t been a brief loading screen before the world around him was revealed. It wasn’t Mac Anu, but…something different, something far better than he could ever imagine.

Terry blinked and looked at his character. It seemed like he was a blue-haired, lean, and rather tall Fist Fighter. After scrolling through the items list, he found a rather large stock and also another thing: a Grunty Flute! This person probably could’ve made a small fortune off this account and he had simply gotten it for so little…

Excitement written all over his face, he started to move his character around the city, reveling in the sights. It was a whole new world in these parts. Less crowded, less scary, and…well, a little less pretty in some ways. The sunset was just too amazing to pass up and stars couldn’t make up for a river, even if he sometimes saw players floating around in the middle after being thrown in. Either way, each city was unique and pretty in its own way. Wonder if the person who previously had this account was just doing it for the money…

“Hey, you!” The Fist Fighter continued to move on despite the voice, thinking that the guy was probably calling someone else. “With the blue hair!” At that he stopped and turned slowly, looking right into the eyes of a Heavy Axeman. A few more inches forward and their foreheads would have been touching. Had he been following him or something? “You seem like a good, well-rounded guy to go adventuring with. How about it, Shenmock?”

“Huh? Oh…yeah.” A voice in the back of his head started to throw incomprehensible words at him and he blinked. Your name is Shenmock here, not Terry. But what do I do? I’ve never met this guy and for all I know he’s a PKer… He scratched the back of his head and smiled at him, trying to avoid his gaze. He felt somewhat like the guy would try to slice him in half if he so much as shook his head. “Uh, sure! Where to? I’m kind of rusty, so you’ll – ”

The man gave him a wide grin, grabbed him by the arm, and literally dragged him on the Chaos Gate. “Great to see you so pumped, kid! We’re going to an area five levels above you, so you better be ready!” Before the Fist Fighter even got a word out, golden rings surrounded them and the peaceful world around him disappeared. The loading screen came up and Terry took that time to whimper.

This was going to be a painful first experience, wasn’t it?
