As rank outsiders in the World Cup, Russia know they really are coming to the tournament to learn more about the demands of top level Rugby League.
And the Russians are with some other fledging nations in their pool with PNG and Tonga all trying to make a name for themselves in the Rugby Leaue world. Like PNG, all Russian sights will be set on their meeting , when both sides will feel they have a chance of victory.
The enormous upheavals in Russia have made it difficult to make progress in sport, but Rugby League has maintained its presence largely in Moscow and the city of Kazan.
The Russians came out of the international wilderness when they played a three-match tour in France in early June, and the damage done by their years in exile was clearly shown when they lost 82-nil to the Frogs in the full international.
But the Russians improved with every game, and with a handful of Australians, who qualify for Russia in this World Cup through the grandparent rule, likely to boost their standards, the corner may well have been turned.
But the break up of the old Soviet Union had a damaging effect on all sports, and Rugby League was no exception. The Russians still managed to travel to San Francisco, where they beat the Americans 18-12.
Now back in the fold of full international Rugby League, hopes are high that this World Cup will be the springboard for a revival in the Russian game.

The Captain of the Russian Bears was also named today, Victor Netchaev a Locomotive man was keen on optomistic on the future of Russian League, "It can onlly get better, we have set ourselves a realistic goal for this World Cup and that is to just win one game, and the games we lose not lose them too heavily."

The Bears coach Chris O'Keefe told the press today that they were going into an intese training camp leading up to the World Cup and no details could be released of its wearbouts for legal reasons.
